From the President
The Board of Directors at the Mosby Heritage Area Association invites all friends of MHAA to our first special event of the year: a Battlefield tour of Balls Bluff in Leesburg, Virginia, coming up this Saturday, May 1, and led by Jim Morgan, the top expert on that little-known by important early Civil War battle.

All proceeds from this fund-raising event will go to underwrite MHAA’s extensive educational programs for young people and adults. This is a great opportunity to help us spread our “Preservation Through Education” message, while at the same time taking in for yourself an important part of our nation’s heritage.

If you cannot attend, please consider being a sponsor for the event or purchasing a ticket (or two!) for someone you know. Scroll down for more info on the three-hour event’s complete itinerary and to make your reservation. Seats on the bus are limited, so sign up today!

Also on tap: our next “Cavaliers, Courage and Coffee” lantern light presentation at Rector House on Saturday evening, May 22. These popular programs are always informing and entertaining and are family-friendly events.

We invite you to join the Mosby Heritage Area Association as members. We greatly appreciate the support we have received from preservation-minded people from all across the nation. Please join us in our effort to preserve our section of this great country: the historic, scenic Northern Virginia Piedmont.

If you’d like to learn more about joining us, please go to our website, www.mosbyheritagearea.org

Saturday Opening of the Rector House
The Mosby Heritage Area Association has been headquartered at the Rector House at Atoka for more than 10 years thanks to the generosity of the Atoka Preservation Society.  During those years MHAA have been asked by visitors if we were open on the weekends.   We tried opening on Sundays one summer, but because of staffing issues, the house is only open during the week, except for special events.

During June, July and August this 15th anniversary year, MHAA will open the Rector House Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. to tell the story of the house, its association with Col. John S. Mosby and General J.E.B. Stuart, and the village of Atoka.

To do this, we need volunteers to greet visitors and tell our story.   We will provide historical background information and training to our volunteers.  We encourage volunteers to work in pairs, to make the day more fun.

To volunteer on one or more Saturdays during the summer, contact Judy Reynolds at 540-687-6681 or by email at info@mosbyheritagearea.org

We would like to hear from you by May 7. in time for one of two training sessions set for Monday, May 10, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Tuesday, May 11, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.   If you would like to volunteer but cannot make either of these sessions, we can make separate arrangements.

Mosby Ride - Sunday, May 23, 2010
The Mosby Heritage Area Association is sponsoring a Mosby Ride on Sunday, May 23.  Participants may travel on horseback or by car to three sites associated with Col. John S. Mosby and his Rangers.   The ride begins at the Gum Tree Farm of Walter and Franny Kansteiner.

The day’s adventure will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a brief introduction before riders mount. Those traveling by car receive instructions.  Riders will go overland and those in cars by road to the first site at the corner of Willisville and Greengarden Road.  Here they will be met by an interpreter, who will give a brief presentation about the significance of this site.  The next stop will be Ayreshire Farm, followed by Green Garden Farm.   Riders and drivers will then return to Gum Tree Farm for a picnic luncheon.

Horseback riders need safety head gear, a release form, and a current coggins test.  Those traveling by car will receive instructions and directions to the sites.  The cost for the horseback ride and luncheon is $150 per person and $100 for those travelling by car

This fundraiser has been very popular in the past.  Make your reservation by calling 540-687-6681 or online to register through PayPal on the Calendar of Events page of the MHAA website, www.mosbyheritagearea.org.

October 1-3, 2010

On the weekend of October 1-3, the Mosby Heritage Area Association will sponsor its 13th annual Conference on the Art of Command in the Civil at the Middleburg Community Center. The topic for this year’s conference is The Battle of Fredericksburg; December 11-15, 1862. Participants come from across the United States to spend the weekend immersed in this five-day battle.

Another Aldie Triangle Program Success
On Tuesday, April 13 and Wednesday April 14 more than 200 Loudoun County students and 30 adults participated in the Mosby Heritage Area Association’s Aldie Triangle; Impact of War program.  This year’s participants came from Aldie, Middleburg, Lincoln, Lucketts, and Pinebrook Elementary Schools, as well as The Hill School of Middleburg.

Participants visited Aldie Mill, Mount Zion Church and Oak Hill to learn about life in the area during the 1860s.  MHAA members Lt. Col. Arthur House, as Col. Fairfax, and Cynthia Buck-Thompson, as his sister Martha, presented a first person interpretation of the Fairfax’s, who lived at Oak Hill during  of the Civil War.  Judy Reynolds, MHAA exective director, helped students learn about life during this period by examining replicas and antiques provided by Ms. Buck-Thompson.  Helen Christian and Delores Rothwell, MHAA member-volunteers told participants about the Oak Hill dinosaurs.

MHAA’s Gray Ghost Interpretive Group members Jim Hildbold and Gary Carroll told the story of Mosby and military life at Mount Zion Church.  Other volunteers at Mount Zion Church gave presentations on Civil War medicine, the church’s history through the eyes of a parishioner, and a Unionist civilian’s view of the war.

The miller at Aldie Mill showed students how the mill operated and talked about life around the mill during the war.  Rich Gillespie, MHAA’s director of education, told the story of a runaway slave and the Aldie Races.

This program’s success is due to the volunteers who make presentations as well as to those who help see that the program runs smoothly.  This year Pat Mountain volunteered for the two days at Mount Zion Church and George Tiedeman volunteered for the two days at the Aldie Mill.  Barbara Tiedeman, Mary Anne Healey and Marge Arnade volunteered at Oak Hill.

MHAA thanks Mr. and Mrs. Thomas DeLashmutt for allowing MHAA to use Oak Hill for the Aldie Triangle Program.   We also are appreciative to the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority and the Mount Zion Preservation Society for their help in making this a successful and rewarding program for area students.

MHAA Greets Historic Garden Week Visitors

Site of the Month
Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Park

The Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park is located about two miles from Leesburg, Virginia, just off the Route 15 bypass that skirts the town to the east.  Take Battlefield Parkway off the bypass and follow the signs.  The park was established in 1984 and now encompasses 223 acres, which include all of the key areas of the historical battlefield itself except for the site of the early morning skirmishing where the Potomac Crossing subdivision now sits.

The key feature of the park is the Ball’s Bluff National Cemetery, the nation’s third smallest national cemetery, which contains the remains of 54 Union soldiers killed at the battle.

The park contains several well-marked hiking trails and a nearly one-mile interpretive loop on which the visitor will find 21 historical signs and two large maps.  Maps and brochures also are available in the kiosk stand at the parking lot. The park does not have  a visitors center and there are no picnic or bathroom facilities.

The park is open from dawn to dusk.  There is no admission fee.  Get information about the park, scheduled tours, and special events by contacting the park manager at TEMPLEHALLFARM@nvrpa.org or by phone to 703-779-9372.
