Mosby Heritage Area Association Newsletter
December 2009
From the President
I would thank all the people who have given their time and resources to the Mosby Heritage Area Association in 2009. We had a very good year (in a very tough economic climate), spreading the word about the history and the value of our unique part of the world through our many and varied programs for children and adults. All of this was made possible through the efforts of our all-volunteer Board of Directors and Advisory Board, by our valued members, by our altruistic volunteers, and by our two valued staffers, Executive Director Judy Reynolds and Education Director Rich Gillespie.
You can read below about a very successful new endeavor for us in 2009, the raffling of famed Civil War artist Mort Kunstler’s “Jackson’s Foot Cavalry, Old Mill, Strasburg, Virginia, June 1, 1862” print on December 4. In 2010, MHAA’s 15th anniversary year, we will have another fund-raising raffle of a limited-edition Kunstler print, this one with the MHAA logo. Stay tuned for details. And for news of other special 15th anniversary events throughout the year.
We invite everyone to come to our events next year. As for today, please consider sending a tax-deductible contribution. There’s still time before the end of the year. Thank you very much for your support. It means a lot to us.
Warmest greetings of the season,
Marc Leepson,
President, Mosby Area Heritage Association
We Have a Winner!
Gary Carroll, MHAA’s own John Singleton Mosby, pulled the winning raffle ticket for the Mort Kunstler print “Jackson’s Foot Cavalry” at Framecraft in Old Town Warrenton. The winner is Susan Kuroski. Col. Mosby called her to give her the news. She was very surprised and pleased.
Susan and her husband David are MHAA members and live in Powhatan, Virginia. They own Edgemont, the childhood home of John S. Mosby. Susan has volunteered at our Civil War Conference for several years and is a frequent participant in our other events.
MHAA raised $3,000 from the sale of tickets. These funds will be used to support our educational programs in the schools and to the public in 2010. We thank all who participated by purchasing raffle tickets.
MHAA is very pleased to have worked with Mark Moore at Framecraft over the past four months. He expertly framed the Kunstler print, which was signed by the artist and dedicated to the Mosby Heritage Area Association. MHAA will be working with Mark again in 2010 on another Mort Kunstler print raffle. Stay tuned to this newsletter in coming months for details.
Kunstler Signing in Warrenton
Internationally known Civil War artist Mort Kunstler drew a crowd of more than150 people to the Warrenton Courthouse on Saturday, November 21. Kunstler signed prints, glass on prints already framed, books – you name it – for appreciative fans standing in line to meet him.
MHAA Board members Steve Hines, Barbara Freson and Joe Dempsey, along with Executive Director Judy Reynolds, worked this event, selling $800 in raffle tickets for the Kunstler print MHAA raffled off on December 4.
MHAA members and many others enjoyed the brisk outdoors at this event sponsored by Framecraft Owner Mark Moore, who donated the raffle framed print of “Jackson’s “Foot Cavalry.”

The Mosby Heritage Area Association 15th Anniversary in 2010
In 2010, the Mosby Heritage Area Association will celebrate its 15th anniversary. Members of the Board of Directors are planning some special events for this memorial year. Plans will be finalized in the next month.
In addition, our regularly scheduled events will have a 15th anniversary twist. That includes the Civil War Conference in October and the Cavaliers, Courage and Coffee programs. Three special talks are being planned for 2010.
A 15th anniversary banner has been added to our logo for 2010. A special page is being written for our website that will showcase the history of the organization. We also will profile our founding members.

The Old Jail Museum
Warrenton, Virginia
The Old Jail Museum, formerly the Fauquier County jail, is now the home of the Fauquier Historical Society.

The Old Jail Museum
Built in 1808, the front portion of the jail originally contained four cells, each of which was approved to house 40 prisoners. In 1823, after only 15 years of use, the 1808 jail was deemed insufficient and a new stone jail was built just to the rear of the older structure. The 1808 jail was then converted into a house for the jailor with a kitchen made of the leftover stones from the "New Jail" added in 1824.
The rear structure contains original cells, as well as an exercise yard, which was also used as a hanging yard. Hangings took place in the yard until 1896. This is one of the most perfectly preserved old jails in the Commonwealth, and was operated as a jail until 1966.
Today, the Old Jail is a history museum focusing on the histories of the Town of Warrenton, Fauquier County, and the Commonwealth of Virginia. All of the artifacts that make up the museum's exhibitions have been donated by generous local citizens.
Featured Exhibitions at the Old Jail Museum include Two Hundred Years at the Old Jail (1808 - 2008), Maximum Security Cell Block, Colonial Kitchen,“Recreation of an 1823 Jail Cell, The Civil War in Fauquier County, It's Child's Play: 19th and Early 20th Century Toys, Native Americans in Fauquier County, Rappahannock Canal Boat / Early Industry in Fauquier County,,“Wine Cellar Exhibit and much more.
The museum is located at 10 Ashby Street in Old Town Warrenton. It is open to the public from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. daily except on Mondays. To learn more about the museum and the Fauquier Historical Society go to www.fauquierhistory.com.
