Mosby Heritage Area Association Newsletter
September 2009

From The President
I am very pleased to report that you are reading the first issue of the third year of the Mosby Heritage Area Association e-Newsletter. We began the newsletter two years ago in an effort to help spread our “Preservation Through Education” message farther and wider than our small corner of the world in the wonderful Northern Virginia Piedmont.

And the word is getting spread. We now have supporters and members all across the nation. It’s a satisfying feeling to know that the hard work we do every day to preserve our historic and beautiful part of the world is appreciated far and wide.

Our next special event that supports our mission is the talk on Saturday, September 19 by Jim Rees, the Executive Director of Mount Vernon, on George Washington: Soldier, Statesman, Farmer at the Hill School Performing Arts Center in Middleburg. Please scroll down for more info on that and on two other signature MHAA events that are coming up soon:

  • our 12th annual Conference on the Art of Command in the Civil War, October 2-4 at the Middleburg Community Center,
  • the talk on Saturday, October 17 by Dr. Daniel Preston, the renowned James Monroe Scholar (along with an appearance by James Monroe himself), at historic Oak Hill, Monroe’s home near Leesburg.

We encourage everyone to learn more about MHHA at our website, www.mosbyheritagearea.org.

The 12th Annual Conference on the Art of Command in the Civil War – October 2-4
This year we will be devoting ourselves to the study of Major General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s extraordinary 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign. This campaign has come down through history as a brilliant example of what an independent command of just 17,000 men can accomplish against enormous odds through the use of lightning- fast movement and audacious action.

Major General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and General George B. McClellan

We will have eight historians talk with us Friday afternoon and Saturday – October 2nd  and 3rd. October 4th will be spent on the Shenandoah battlefields where General Jackson so befuddled his enemy.

Please spend a little time with our conference brochure as it outlines more information about our speakers and gives the titles of their presentations.

The brochure with the registration form can be downloaded from our web site. For further information, call 540-687-6681 or email us at info@mosbyheritagearea.org

Jackson's Foot Cavalry
Old Mill, Strasburg, VA, June 1, 1862
The Mosby Heritage Area Association is pleased to announce the donation of Mort Kunstler’s Jackson’s “Foot Cavalry”, Old Mill, Strasburg, VA, June 1, 1862 print by Framecraft of Warrenton.  The print was donated for this year’s Conference on the Art of Command in the Civil War, which will look at this famous Valley Campaign of 1862

This Civil War print depicts General Stonewall Jackson marching along the Valley Turnpike (Route 11) as he and his “foot cavalry” passes the old mill at Strasburg, Virginia.  Jackson’s command had the reputation of marching at the pace of cavalry.  During the spring and summer of 1862, Jackson’s men marched 400 miles, engaged in six battles, and defeated five Union Generals in 38 days.

The print is personally signed by Mort Kunstler.  It is one of 350 limited edition prints that is now sold out.   Framecraft of Warrenton has framed the 23” X 31” print.

MHAA will raffle the framed print for $20 per ticket beginning at the Jim Rees Talk about George Washington on September 19 and ending with the drawing for the winner on December 1.   The print will be on display  at the George Washington lecture on Sept. 19, at the Civil Was Conference on October 2 & 3 and at the Mr. Monroe at Oak Hill Event on October 17.  It can also be seen at the MHAA office at Atoka.

Tickets will be available at all MHAA events, at the MHAA office, and online through Pay Pal.

Site of the Month
National Zoo's Conservation and Research Center
The following information about the Front Royal Campus of the National Zoo was taken from their website HERE.

The Conservation and Research Center started primarily as a breeding center for endangered birds and mammals. Today, the black-footed ferret, Eld's deer, and several species of Pacific island birds are being bred to maintain genetic diversity and provide reserves for highly endangered species.

The current priority for CRC's animal collection is veterinary and reproductive research. By living in controlled environments, the birds and mammals—most of them little-known and endangered—provide ideal subjects for intensive study and the rapid acquisition of urgently needed information. Findings from these studies provide critical information for the management of captive populations and valuable insights for the conservation and management of wild populations.

The Smithsonian's Conservation and Research Center has been located in Front Royal, Virginia, since 1974. Acquisition of the property to support the National Zoo's wildlife conservation programs follows a rich history of activities.

Did You Know?
Kidron and Jeff, World War I General John H. “Black Jack” Pershing’s horses, spent their last days in Front Royal and are buried on the grounds of the Conservation and Research Center.
