Advocating for the Preservation of the Mosby Heritage Area

A significant part of the Mosby Heritage Area Association’s mission is to be a strong advocate for the preservation of the historic, cultural, scenic, and natural resources in this magnificent area of the Northern Virginia Piedmont. We work on this in a variety of ways.

First, the Mosby Heritage Area Association has created educational materials for students and adults, offering suggestions about what they can do to preserve our heritage and be stewards of the heritage area’s resources. These include Student Heritage Steward: Be One in the Mosby Heritage Area for students, and What Can I do to Preserve the Mosby Heritage Area? for adults. Both publications offer ways to get involved on a variety of levels of intensity, realizing that time and commitment vary. These are distributed at our school and public programs and are posted on our web site.

Second, the Mosby Heritage Area Association has put together an economic study, Profiting from Preservation, which provides information about the economic benefits of preservation to communities and to their local economies. This report examines heritage tourism, agriculture—especially the equine and wine industries—the cost to taxpayers and local government of open space versus developed space, and the value of renovation of existing sites and streetscapes, including the Main Street program.

Third, since it was formed in 1995, the Mosby Heritage Area Association has offered its expertise, counsel, and support on many preservation issues that affect the preservation of our heritage within the Mosby Heritage Area. With rapid growth in the region, this “weighing in” becomes a critical role.
