The Caleb Rector House: A Witness to War

  • Virginia Piedmont Heritage Area 1461 Atoka Road Marshall United States (map)

Few homes have withstood the tests of war, Reconstruction, and modern development. The 1801 Caleb Rector House, located along the historic Ashby’s Gap Turnpike witnessed over two centuries of history, including dramatic actions of the Civil War. During the conflict, Colonel John Singleton Mosby raised the first company of the famed 43rd Virginia Cavalry Battalion in the first floor of the house, and frequently used the home as a rendezvous for his operations. Used today as the headquarters for the Virginia Piedmont Heritage Area, the house continues to tell the story of the Rector family who lived within its walls. Join us and explore the house, experience the history of the family brought to life through living history interpretation, and learn how the VPHA continues its mission of Preservation through Education.
