The Mosby Heritage Area Association provides programs and services that inspire residents and visitors of all ages about our historic and scenic resources encouraging them to support our preservation goals.

Mosby, Heritage, and You—A Classroom Program for 4th Grade Virginia Studies.

Our interactive classroom program comes right to your public or private school at no charge if you are in Loudoun, Fauquier, Clarke, Warren, or Prince William counties  It is designed to review and enrich 4th Grade Virginia Studies SOLs, while promoting student and teacher interest in local history and the value of heritage and its preservation. Each program is customized to the school by introducing “the Gray Ghost” in a local context.  We use Mosby events that occurred near your school to spark interest in the stories, photographs, and artifacts that we share.  We stress the role students can play in uncovering and preserving the stories and sites of local history in the Mosby Heritage Area. Students in Loudoun, Fauquier, and Clarke counties will be armed with a scavenger hunt at the end of our visit to explore interesting sites in their county.  The teacher will be armed with pre-visit and post-visit materials to extend the lessen as well as to review it.  Understanding Mosby in many ways is a foot in the door to understanding our local history. This program can be booked by calling our Director of Education at (540) 687-5578.

“Cavaliers, Courage, and Coffee:  Mosby Owned the Night”

—our monthly on-site program Presented by our all-volunteer Gray Ghost Interpretive Group, this is a two-hour family program by eerie lantern-light exploring nooks and crannies of the little Civil War village of Atoka.  Costumed interpreters bring visitors back to 1863-65 when Loudoun and Fauquier graced the nation’s “Gray Ghost’, and the many federal efforts to capture Mosby and his Confederate rangers. This was a trying time for both soldiers and civilians. The free programs begin at 8:00 p.m. at the historic Caleb Rector House, across from the Atoka Store just off Route 50 four miles west of Middleburg.   Programs for 2006 will be held on Saturday nights March 11, April 8, May 13, June 10, July 8, and August 12. Civic Group Programs

We will be happy to provide a civic group speaker about John Singleton Mosby, the Mosby Heritage Area, and the state of preservation in our region upon request.  We try to tailor our programs to local and group interest.  Programs last from 25 to 45 minutes.  Call our Director of Education Rich Gillespie at (540) 687-5578 to request a program.

Volunteer Opportunity:  Join the Gray Ghost Interpretive Group (GGIG)

Formed in 2004, the Gray Ghost Interpretive Group presents monthly programs on Mosby and the history of the Mosby Heritage Area both at Atoka and on the road.   We need those willing to be story tellers of the heritage and preservation issues of this region.  It is exciting, passionate work, and we will use you for as much or little time as you have available.  Call our Director of Education Rich Gillespie at (540) 687-5578 to find out more.
